Everything You Need to Know About Dough

If someone were to ask you what dough really is, you’d probably readily answer that it is the stuff that bread is made of. That is true – but it isn’t really the complete story, not by a long shot!

The truth is that dough is really a mixture of flour, grains and water. Sometimes other liquids such as milk may be used too. Dough has been used throughout the world to create various different types of food, and you may be surprised to realize just how differently some cultures use it!

One of the biggest misunderstandings related to dough is to equate it to batter. In many ways, the two are extremely similar and the fact of the matter is that the only real difference between them is that batter tends to be more liquid while dough is generally a lot more solid.

Needless to say, the type of dough may vary greatly based on the ingredients that are used. With different cereals or grains being used in dough, the texture and taste can vary greatly. Similarly different types of flours can also produce different types of dough.

On top of that many recipes add other substances to dough too, such as sugar, salt, milk, eggs, and so on. Each additional substance changes the make-up of the dough in some way or other and thus influences how it (and the food that is created using it) eventually tastes.

To develop a deeper understanding of just how much dough can vary though, it would be best to look at how it is used!

What Can be Made From Dough?

Without a doubt the most popular recipe that dough is used for has got to be bread – but this isn’t just limited to the conventional Western bread that most people are familiar with.

Truth be told, there are bread-based recipes from throughout the world that use dough, including flatbreads, dumplings, naan, roti, tortilla, and so on. Frankly speaking – if it appears ‘bread-like’ in nature, chances are that it was made using some dough or other!

Many recipes also fry dough to create certain types of foods, and yet others roast it or boil it in certain ways. Coupled with the vast variety of types of dough that can be created, you should be starting to see just how many food types can be created from dough alone!

Now that you have a good understanding of dough and exactly what it is all about, you may even want to experiment yourself with various recipes. A little bit of creativity and a willingness to try new things can go a long way, especially when you’re dealing with something as versatile as dough!
